Anglican church deadlocked over new leader - report

LONDON (Reuters) - A Church of England panel meeting in secret to choose the next Archbishop of Canterbury has failed to reach agreement on who should be the new leader of the world's 80 million Anglicans, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

After three days of talks behind closed doors in an undisclosed location, officials narrowed the field to three candidates, but will need to meet again to finish the job, the Sunday Times said, citing an unnamed senior cleric.

The choice of a replacement for Rowan Williams, who steps down in December, is critical for a church in danger of splitting over divisive issues such as gay marriage and senior women clergy, and facing a rising threat from secularism.

The Crown Nominations Commission (CNC), a church panel with 16 members whose chairman is appointed by the prime minister, had been expected to pick a preferred candidate and a second choice on Friday, a church source said last week.

The names were then due to be passed to Prime Minister David Cameron and Queen Elizabeth, supreme governor of the Church of England, before an official announcement within days, possibly on Wednesday.

In a brief statement, the church said a decision would be reached during the autumn. Officials had previously signalled that it could come as early as next week.

"The work of the Commission continues. There will be no comment on any speculation about candidates or about the CNC's deliberations," it said.

According to the Sunday Times, the panel has a three name shortlist:

* Bishop of Norwich Graham James, 61, a keen amateur actor and cricketer who said last week he would "hope and pray" someone else gets the job.

* Archbishop of York John Sentamu, 63, a Ugandan-born traditionalist who holds the second most senior post in the Church of England and writes a column for the Sun newspaper.

* Bishop of Durham Justin Welby, 56, a former oil industry executive who has been a bishop for less than a year.

The 105th Archbishop of Canterbury will take over at a painful time for a church divided by long-running debates over sexuality and senior roles for women clergy. Liberal attitudes among some clerics in Britain and the United States have infuriated conservatives in places with growing congregations, such as Nigeria.

Williams, 62, who takes up a position at Cambridge University, said in March that his successor would need the "constitution of an ox and the skin of a rhinoceros".

The head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, expressed sympathy for the winning candidate.

"They all get hammered, you know, the Archbishops of Canterbury," he told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. "I have sympathy. Everybody's saying it's an impossible job."

Robbinsdale Early Childhood Education Programs Receive Four ...

The Robbinsdale Area Schools Early Family Education preschool, Family Literacy, and Creative Play Preschool,
including Creative Play at Sonnesyn and Zachary Lane Elementary Schools, have earned the highest rating, four stars, from Parent Aware. Parent Aware helps parents in Minnesota find childcare and early education providers that are focused on excellent early learning and kindergarten readiness.?

The program has a one to four-star ratings system, which is a free service to families, which measures best practices identified by research that help children succeed in kindergarten and beyond. To earn the four star rating,
programs must use a curriculum that is aligned with the Minnesota Early Childhood Indicators of Progress (ECIP) and all lead childcare providers and/or lead teachers must complete at least eight hours of training on the
implementation of the curriculum.? Teachers in the Robbinsdale Area Schools early childhood programs are
all licensed teachers and have completed much more than the required eight hours of training on curriculum implementation.

Also to earn the four star rating, a program must conduct assessments using an approved tool with all children at least twice a year in the following areas:? social/emotional development, language and literacy, and mathematical thinking and physical development.? As well, all teachers must have completed at least eight hours of training on authentic child assessment.? The early childhood programs in Robbinsdale Area Schools use a portfolio assessment system in which assessments are given and progress is tracked.? This portfolio is passed to kindergarten teachers when students enter kindergarten in an elementary school in the district, giving the kindergarten teacher a better
understanding of their students.? The early childhood staff in Robbinsdale have completed well over the eight hours
of required training on authentic assessment.

U.S., Gulf countries seek to advance missile defense plan

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States and its Gulf partners are looking to deepen cooperation on missile defense as tensions rise with Iran, and announcements could come soon on new purchases, U.S. officials said on Friday.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) officials in New York as Washington seeks to boost regional defenses against perceived Iranian threats.

"Our aim is to help our Gulf partners with their defense needs ... there is a missile threat that they face, we want to help them face that threat as best they can," one senior U.S. official said, previewing the meeting for reporters.

"We've had expressions of interest from our partners in the Gulf in additional missile defense capabilities," the official said. "We hope that we will be having announcements in the near future regarding those expressions of interest."

The official declined to provide specifics on the plans with the GCC, a political and economic alliance linking Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

But Lockheed Martin Corp, the Pentagon's top supplier by sales, received an initial $1.96 billion contract in December for two of its Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) weapon systems for the United Arab Emirates, the first foreign sale of the system.

Lockheed has said other GCC members, including Saudi Arabia, have expressed interest. Other leading missile-defense contractors include Boeing Co, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman Corp.

Friday's talks reflect the increased tempo of U.S. efforts to put pressure on Tehran, which the United States and its allies say is seeking nuclear weapons capability under the cover of a civil program. Iran denies this, but has been hit with a series of international sanctions over its nuclear work.

SECURITY UMBRELLA

The United States has been working with Gulf states on a bilateral basis, not as a group, to boost the range of radar coverage and related capabilities across the Gulf for the earliest possible defense against any missiles fired by Iran.

The Pentagon said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who had planned to attend Friday's meeting along with White House Security Adviser Tom Donilon, was unable to make it due to bad weather in New York.

U.S. officials said the ultimate goal is a regional shield that can be coordinated with U.S. systems - parallel with Washington's drive to expand missile defense to protect NATO's European territory against ballistic missiles that could be fired by Iran.

The officials said expanded security cooperation with the Gulf is already bearing fruit and pointed to recent joint anti-mining exercises by the navies of 12 countries.

Iran has threatened to target U.S. interests in the Gulf, including military bases, and to block vital oil tanker routes in the Strait of Hormuz if it is attacked.

Plans for a joint missile shield in the Gulf have been on the table for some time, but progress has been slow due to unease among some GCC members about sharing data and where such a system would be commanded.

Individual Gulf states have acquired some advanced defense systems, including the latest versions of the Patriot Air and Missile Defense System. The United Arab Emirates has spent billions of dollars in recent years to protect its cities and oil infrastructure from missile attack.

Freddie Mac wins dismissal of shareholder lawsuit

(Reuters) - A federal judge has again dismissed a lawsuit accusing Freddie Mac of misleading shareholders by understating its subprime mortgage exposure and overstating its capital strength ahead of the 2008 financial crisis.

U.S. District Judge John Keenan in Manhattan said the allegations made in an amended lawsuit failed to show that Freddie Mac officials, including former Chief Executive Richard Syron, intended to mislead shareholders, or withheld significant information from them.

He also said Freddie Mac had made a "bevy of truthful disclosures" about its credit and risk exposures during the period covered by the lawsuit, including over loans it guaranteed and its activities in nontraditional markets.

"It defies logic to conclude that executives who are seeking to perpetrate fraudulent information upon the market would make such fulsome disclosures," Keenan wrote.

Shareholders led by the Illinois-based Central States, Southeast and Southwest Areas Pension Fund had accused Freddie Mac of hiding its risks after revealing a $2 billion quarterly loss on November 20, 2007.

The lawsuit covers losses by investors in Freddie Mac common and preferred shares from that date until September 7, 2008, when U.S. regulators seized Freddie Mac and larger rival Fannie Mae and put them in a conservatorship under the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Keenan had in March 2011 dismissed an earlier version of the lawsuit, which was first filed in August 2008, but given the plaintiffs a chance to amend their complaint. He refused on Wednesday to give them another chance.

The shareholder lawsuit is separate from a civil fraud lawsuit that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has been pursuing against Syron and other former Freddie Mac officials. Defendants in that case have denied wrongdoing.

The case, whose title has a different named plaintiff, is Kuriakose v. Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 08-07281.

Brazilian court bans anti-Islam film from YouTube

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? A judge in Brazil has ordered YouTube to remove clips of the movie that has touched off deadly protests across the Muslim world, the court said in a statement.

Judge Gilson Delgado Miranda gave the video-sharing site ten days to remove videos of the film, "Innocence of Muslims." After that, YouTube's parent company, Google, will face fines of $5,000 a day for every day the clips remain accessible in Brazil, according to the statement posted on the court's website late Tuesday .

The lawsuit was filed by a group representing Brazil's Muslim community, the National Union of Islamic Entities, which claims the film violates Brazil's constitutional guarantee of religious freedom for all faiths.

In a statement on the group's website, Mohamad al Bukai, the head of religious matters for the Sao Paulo-based organization, hailed the ruling as a victory.

"Freedom of expression must not be confused with giving disproportionate and irresponsible offense, which can provoke serious consequences for society," al Bukai said.

The statement also includes excerpts from the ruling, in which the judge stresses "this type of jurisprudence cannot be confused with censorship," which he defines as "the undue restriction of the civic consciousness."

Courts or officials in other countries also have sought to restrict access to clips of "Innocence of Muslims," renewing the debate over freedom of expression in the Middle East, the United States and Europe.

The film's portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester, has enraged many Muslims. At least 51 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, have been killed in violence linked to protests over the film.

The Sao Paulo court's ruling came on the same day that Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff addressed the United Nations and urged an end to prejudice against Muslims.

The ruling follows a rash of other Brazilian court rulings against Google stemming from Brazil's strict electoral laws, which restrict what critics can say on television and radio about candidates for office. Ahead of municipal elections next month, Google has been repeatedly requested to remove videos that violate those restrictions, and on Tuesday, a judge in Mato Grosso do Sul state ordered the arrest of the head of Google's operations in Brazil for failure to remove YouTube videos that attacked a mayoral candidate.

Google said in an emailed statement on Tuesday that it was appealing the decisions regarding electoral laws and content removal. The company did not respond to requests for comment Wednesday about the "Innocence of Muslims" case.

Earlier this month a judge in Parana state in southern Brazil ordered that Google pay $500,000 for each day that it balked in fulfilling an order to remove videos from YouTube that attacked a candidate. In the northeastern state of Paraiba, a judge also ordered the imprisonment of another Google executive in Brazil earlier this month, also for not removing videos from YouTube attacking a mayoral candidate. That order was overruled by a higher court.

Hello Kitty Cafe (for Android)

If a deep-seated part of you giggles when you see a Hello Kitty character, then you?ll be squealing loudly over Sanrio Digital?s simplistic, but adorably kitsch, arcade game on Android, Hello Kitty Caf? (free).

In Hello Kitty Caf?, you take on the role of a restaurant manager trying to grow your Sanrio-themed restaurant. Your employees are all Sanrio characters with varying strengths, and you need to juggle the needs of your staff with the demands of your growing clientele. Potential decisions: should you handle an impatient new customer first, or ring up someone who?s been waiting to leave? Replace ageing furniture, or add to the menu? Promote current employees, or hire new ones?

Okay, so Hello Kitty Caf? sounds like actual work, but coupled with Sanrio anime cuteness, slick graphics, and a high-quality soundtrack, Hello Kitty Caf? is actually a charming, if repetitive, way to pass time.

Gameplay
You start with a single employee?the yellow Sanrio dog, Purim?who you have to direct to fulfill various duties of a restaurant: bringing customers to tables, taking orders, fulfilling orders, settling bills, and clearing tables. If you leave any task unattended for too long, you lose customers, and potential money. Every day (which runs about five minutes) represents a new level, and every level brings more business. The first few levels are pretty slow and easy. I'm no multitasker, but I never lost a customer on my first stab.

As the levels get harder, you find yourself having to manage your supply chain to meet the higher customer turnover. It also becomes abundantly clear that the slow Purim can?t handle everything himself. Fortunately, at the end of every level, you have the option to enhance your restaurant with new employees (all Sanrio characters), promote existing ones, or, eventually, upgrade the restaurant with new menu items and furniture. Some of these level ups can be bought with coins you earn after passing a level, but most require points.

Earning Points
Annoyingly, there are only two ways to earn points. The fastest is with money. A hundred points will set you back $0.99, and hiring new employees ranges from Pochacco for 80 points to Pekkle, for 3,000 points. Alternatively you can earn ?free? points by installing affiliate apps (like the dubious-sounding Deity Wars, Blood Brothers, or VIZ Manga). No information is given about these apps either, so a user has absolutely no way of knowing what he?s about to put on his device. Doesn't sound safe to me.

Hello Kitty Caf? looks and sounds great, thanks to surprisingly high-quality design from Sanrio's digital arm. And although the game is pretty repetitive, it's oddly satisfying as well trying to figure out the most efficient way to manage all the demands of the caf?. Two things would raise the game's rating, however: an easier way to earn points, and a social element, like being able to go into other people's caf?s.

Thai Real Estate Reports Mixed

The price of single detached homes in Thailand fell in the second quarter of 2012, but prices for condominiums, townhomes and residential land are on the rise, which makes for a mixed report from the Bank of Thailand (BOT). The Real Estate Information Centre reports that housing transfers in greater Bangkok have been dropping since 2010 due to the expiration of tax incentives, yet the BOT is considering taking measures to avoid a property bubble, particularly in the market for condominiums. That bubble has yet to arrive, but increased lending and economic growth may make those measures necessary in the future. For more on this continue reading the following article from Global Property Guide.

The Thai price index for single detached houses dropped by 1.15% (-3.59% inflation-adjusted) during the year to end-Q2 2012, according to the Bank of Thailand (BOT), the country?s central bank.?

On a quarterly basis, it fell 1.81% (-3.03% inflation-adjusted) in Q2, the second consecutive quarterly decline.

However during the year to end-June 2012:

  • The price index for townhouses rose 3.3%
  • The price index for condominiums rose 6.8%
  • The residential land price index increased by 0.5%

In the second quarter of 2012, total outstanding property credit rose by 11.7% to THB1.7 trillion (US$55 billion) compared to the same period last year, according to the Department of Land, Ministry of Interior.

The country?s gross domestic product (GDP) growth was up a stronger-than-expected 4.2% from the same period last year, with recovery from last year?s devastating floods. Despite external uncertainty, the domestic economy is expected to grow by a robust 5.7%, according to the BOT.

Condominium glut

In the third quarter of 2010, there was a sharp drop in housing transfers in Greater Bangkok, because of the expiry of property tax incentives in June, according to the Real Estate Information Centre (REIC). Transfers fell 42% from the previous quarter, with a large number of transfers rushed through before the tax incentives ended.

In the same quarter, developers launched more than 23,000 condominium units onto the market to release pent-up supplies, according to the Colliers International Thailand. The launches were mainly in the low to medium end market, with reduced unit sizes, compensating to some degree for increasing land prices throughout the city.

The take-up, however, has been low, with buyers are increasingly likely to shop around before making a decision, notes Colliers. In Bangkok, take-up rate in Q3 plunged by to 51% from 77% in Q2, and 67% in Q1.

Nevetherless new condominium units near mass-transit routes will see price spikes of at least 5% in 2011, accprding to the real estate development firm Supalai Plc, due to higher construction costs and land prices. Customers will have to accept price increases as land for new condominiums in areas close to mass transit is very scarce. On the other hand, stable prices are expected for low-rise units.

Decreasing yields

The average rental yield in Bangkok is now around 6.2% in May 2010, down from around 7.2% in 2009, according to the Global Property Guide research. Higher yields are realized from condominiums measuring between 45 and 80 sq. m., with yields of around 7%.

In Pattaya, foreigners are shifting from buying residences to renting, at monthly rentals ranging from THB 50,000 to THB 90,000, according to Clayton Wade of Premier Homes Real Estate. Demand for rentals in Pattaya grew strongly when the baht began strengthening against the US dollar.

Interest rate hikes

In July 2010, the BOT raised its key interest rate to 1.5% after maintaining it at 1.25% since April 2009. The rate was further increased by 25 basis points to 1.75% in August, and to 2% in December.

There were concerns, however, about the BOT?s timing, given the weak economy in October. Baht appreciation may occur as interest differentials with the US widen, while higher costs will hit borrowers when banks follow the rates increase. However so far, the Government Housing Bank (GHB) interest rate has been constant since May 2009, at 6.75%.

The BOT explained that a negative real interest rate is inappropriate when the economy is expanding. With the key rate at 2% and inflation around 3.4%, the real interest rate is -1.4%, suggesting that further interest rate rises may occur.

BOT?s preventive measures

The BOT has released new rules in response to public anxiety that Thailand faces the risk of another property bubble, particularly in the condominium sector.

The BOT?s new rules take effect in 2011 and 2012.

  • for condominium units under THB 10 million (USD330,300), bank loans must be limited to 90% of a home?s value, from January 1 2011
  • low-rise housing loan-to-value (LTV) ratios are capped at 95%, starting January 1, 2012.
  • for larger loans, banks must increase risk weighting to between 75% and 100% of the loan value. At present, the risk weighting is set by the BOT for the property sector at 35%.

Risk weightings are used to calculate the minimum amount of capital required to support lending. The higher the risk, the greater capital is required by banks leading to increased overall costs in the form of higher interest rates.

Still no property bubble

In fact, a bubble is unlikely in the Thai property market as prices have risen naturally in the past three years, according to the Government Housing Bank (GHB), a state-owned lending agency. GHB?s president Khan Prachuabmoh insists that there is nothing unusual in the present situation, despite the substantial recent increases in low-end supply.

Real demand, not speculative demand, exists for low-rise housing below THB 3 million (USD99,100), which accounts for 70% of the market, according to Housing Business Association (HBA) president Issara Boonyong. The remaining 30% of demand comes from investors, who buy homes to generate rental income. The 23,000 registrations of new condo units in the first nine months of 2010, compares with 29,000 registrations of low-rise residences, adds Boonyong.

Demand for residential projects is expected to grow by at least 7% in 2011 despite the BOT?s measures to control the property sector, says Thongma Vijitphongpun, chief executive officer of Pruksa Real Estate.

The new rules are unlikely to affect demand, he adds, as down payments on residential projects are usually at least 10%. This is true for both condominiums and low-rise residences.

The low-rise residence market is expected to recover after the mass transit system expands to Bangkok?s neighboring provinces including Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani, according to deputy-governor Teerachon Manomaipibul of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

Demand for rental units in city condominiums continues to grow from both local and foreign tenants as returns are higher (6-10% per annum) compared to saving in a bank, since interest rates for saving deposits linger below 2%, according to Asian Property Development?s senior vice-president Poompat Sinacharoen.

Mortgage lending up!

Somewhat confirming this, the preliminary figures for personal housing credit in Q3 2010 stood at THB 1.058 trillion (USD35 billion), up by 14.7% y-o-y, according to the BOT. The strong growth may be due to the special mortgage campaign launched by the Siam Commercial Bank, the biggest mortgage lender in Thailand.

The campaign allows borrowers to pay monthly installments as low as THB 1,000 (USD33) in the first year for each THB 1 million (USD33,000) taken out, tied with a special interest rate of 1% during the period. The campaign was offered until the end of December 2010.

Outstanding mortgages were 11% percent of GDP in 2009, only a percentage point up from 2008.

Healthy economic growth

After GDP growth of 7.8% in 2010 and a contraction of 2.3% in 2009, GDP expanded by a meager 0.065% during 2011, mainly due to the floods that hit the country in October.

In the second quarter of 2012, the country?s gross domestic product rose 4.2% from the same period last year. However due to the eurozone crisis, exports fell 4.2% during the year to June, the fourth decline in just six months.

Despite external uncertainty, the domestic economy is expected to grow by a robust 5.7%, according to the Bank of Thailand (BOT), the country?s central bank.

The Thai tourism industry, which makes up about 6.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), has already recovered. During the first eight months of 2012, the total number of international arrivals in the country increased 8.7% to 14.34 million, fuelled by arrivals from the Middle East, Oceania, South Asia and Africa, according to the Department of Tourism (DOT).

The headline inflation is projected at 2.9% at between to 3.4% in 2012, according to National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB).? The BOT kept its policy interest rate unchanged at 3% at its September 5 meeting, after cutting the rate twice last November 2011 and January 2012 to help business after the floods.

Myanmar's president heads to US for rare visit

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Myanmar's reformist president left Monday for New York to tout his country's makeover at the United Nations and push for an end to sanctions, in the first U.S. visit by a leader of the former international pariah since 1966.

Since becoming president last year, Thein Sein has overseen widely praised economic and political reforms in Myanmar that follow almost a half century of military rule. His trip to attend the U.N. General Assembly comes as his country enjoys improved relations with the United States.

His visit overlaps with one by Myanmar's biggest celebrity, Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. The opposition leader's high-profile U.S. visit has included a private meeting with President Barack Obama and standing ovations at awards ceremonies in Washington and New York, including at the United Nations, where she worked 40 years ago.

On recent trips abroad, Suu Kyi has been quietly criticized by the government for upstaging the president. But her U.S. itinerary seems aimed at making sure they don't cross paths. She is leaving New York before Thein Sein arrives, making various stops this week at Ivy League schools on the East Coast before heading to California on her way home.

Thein Sein's visit is bound to attract a smaller spotlight than Suu Kyi's, but marks another important moment for Myanmar.

The Southeast Asian country's last leader to make an official visit to the United States was authoritarian former Prime Minister Ne Win in 1966, when the country was still called Burma.

Thein Sein attended the U.N. General Assembly in 2009, but was prime minister then under the much-criticized former military junta chief, Gen. Than Shwe.

He is to deliver a speech Thursday to the General Assembly in which he will highlight the reforms his government has introduced since he took office in March 2011, after the country's first election in 20 years.

"This visit is very significant," said Maj. Zaw Htay, director of the president's office.

"The president will outline the democratic, political and economic reforms he has instituted and he will also explain the challenges that lie ahead," Zaw Htay said. "Myanmar is rejoining the international community, and President Thein Sein will also call on the international community for cooperation and assistance."

Since Suu Kyi won a parliamentary seat in April, the U.S. has normalized diplomatic relations with Myanmar and allowed U.S. companies to start investing there again. Last week, the U.S. Treasury announced it was taking Thein Sein's name off its list of individuals prohibited from doing business or owning property in America. The administration is now considering easing the main plank of its remaining sanctions, a ban on imports.

Thein Sein is expected to meet with several other leaders during the U.N. General Assembly, Zaw Htay said. He is to meet Friday with members of Myanmar's expatriate community in New York before returning home, the spokesman said.

When asked if Myanmar's government is concerned that Suu Kyi's visit might outshine the president, Zaw Htay said, "The president doesn't feel uncomfortable or threatened by the warm reception Daw Aung San Suu Kyi received in the U.S." Daw is a term of respect.

Thein Sein "has openly expressed his happiness with her achievements and he will mention that in his speech at the General Assembly," Zaw Htay said.

PFT: Titans' 44-41 OT win as thrilling as it sounds

An Arizona Cardinals fan celebrates their 27-6 win over the Philadelphia Eagles after their NFL football game in PhoenixReuters

On Sunday afternoons during the NFL season, I?m sitting in my house with three TVs showing games in one room, plus another game showing on my iPad, with my laptop at the ready to check scores and stats. I have the Sunday Ticket package and I watch the Red Zone channel and the Game Mix channel, and I?m the fastest draw in the West when I need to change the channel. My wife brings me snacks so I don?t have to get up for even a minute. If anyone should be able to keep up with every single thing that happens on an NFL Sunday, it?s me.

And as this Sunday?s nine early games came to the late fourth quarter, even I couldn?t keep up with it all. What an amazing Sunday afternoon.

Don?t you wish we could see Sunday?s highlights as edited by Steve Sabol? Sabol, the NFL Films president who died of brain cancer on Tuesday, would have told an amazing story with the material the NFL gave him on Sunday. The nine early games featured three overtimes, three other games decided by a touchdown or less, a shocking upset by the Vikings, a tremendous defensive effort by the Bears and a Bills-Browns game that was, well . . . let?s just say there were eight really good games.

My choice for the best game of the day was that insane finish in Tennessee, where the Lions came back from 14 points down with 18 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime, only to end up losing 44-41. But the Chiefs-Saints battle was also lots of fun, and every time I looked at the Bengals? 38-31 win over the Redskins I saw one of the league?s bright young stars (either Cincinnati?s A.J. Green or Washington?s Robert Griffin III) making a big play. There was no shortage of greatness on display on Sunday.

These are the days when you sit there on your couch and just say, This is why I love football. What a great day.

Here are my other thoughts from Week Three in the NFL:

The replacement officials need to pick up the pace. Games are simply taking far too long. Heading into this week the average length of games was about five minutes longer this season than last season, and maybe that doesn?t sound like much. But those delays while the officials are sorting things out are making some games really drag. The Steelers-Raiders game, in particular, felt like it was taking forever. If Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski had missed his game-winning field goal and the game had gone into overtime, it?s entirely possible that it still would have been going on into the start of Sunday Night Football.

The NFL needs to fine Bill Belichick heavily. I don?t care how bad the officials are ? and they were bad during Sunday night?s Patriots-Ravens game ? you simply cannot put your hands on an official. Belichick put his hands on an official. A fine of $100,000 might be enough to send the message that that simply cannot happen.

Still, the Belichick story shouldn?t overshadow the larger issue. The quality of the officiating in the NFL right now simply isn?t acceptable. The NFL has to fix it.

How did Matt Schaub get cleared so quickly? NFL teams are supposed to have an excess of caution about players suffering concussions, taking the time to have the medical staff check anyone who takes a hard hit to the head, and only clearing players to return to the field if everything is OK. So something seemed suspicious about Texans quarterback Matt Schaub missing only one play after taking a brutal and illegal helmet-to-helmet hit, a hit that had him crumpling to the ground and grabbing his head. I hope I?m wrong to be skeptical, but it sure didn?t seem like Schaub was out long enough to get the kind of thorough examination that a hit like that would warrant.

Jason Hanson should be a Hall of Famer some day. Hanson, the Lions? 21-year veteran kicker, is the oldest player in the NFL at age 42, and has played 314 games with the Lions, the most games any player has played with one team in NFL history. But Hanson doesn?t just have longevity on his side, he has one of the most impressive kicking legs the game has ever seen. On Sunday against the Titans he went 4-for-4 on field goals, making kicks from 47, 53, 33 and 26 yards. That 53-yard field goal was the 51st field goal of his career from 50 yards or farther, the most any kicker has made in NFL history. Oh, and when Lions punter Ben Graham went down, Hanson stepped in and punted flawlessly, averaging 39.3 hards a punt and landing one of them inside the 20-yard line. Hanson probably won?t make it to the Hall of Fame because kickers are remembered for big field goals in big games, and the Lions haven?t been in many big games in Hanson?s career. But the Hall of Fame is supposed to be about individual greatness, and there?s been no greater kicker in NFL history than Jason Hanson.

Jamaal Charles is in very good company. Charles, the Chiefs? starting running back, had 233 rushing yards and 55 receiving yards in Sunday?s win over the Saints, joining Jim Brown as the only players in NFL history with at least 225 rushing yards and 50 receiving yards in the same game. Charles and Brown are also the only NFL players with more than 230 rushing yards in two different games. And if Charles keeps running at his career 6.0 yards-per-carry average and gets 196 more rushing attempts, he?ll break Brown?s record for the highest yards-per-carry average of any running back in NFL history with at least 750 carries. For half a century, Brown has been the gold standard for NFL running backs. It?s amazing that Charles is putting himself in Brown?s company.

Greg Schiano is right in the kneeldown controversy. Schiano, the Buccaneers coach who angered Giants coach Tom Coughlin last week by instructing his players to try to force a fumble while the Giants were kneeling down to run out the clock, did it again on Sunday against the Cowboys. Coughlin might not like it, but I do. Schiano coaches football the right way: Play hard until the game is over.

MSM is a breast cancer miracle cure and so much more

(NaturalNews) Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is an organic, sulfur-containing natural compound without any toxicity that has now been shown in a recent study to inhibit breast cancer growth. This includes suppressing the dreaded triple-negative breast cancer. Scientists demonstrated that MSM substantially decreased the viability of human breast cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner. The higher the dose, the higher the benefits. The study showed reduced expression of breast cancer in just 30 days.Sulfur makes up one quarter of the total body weight and is the third most abundant mineral in the human body. Half of the sulfur in the body is in muscles, skin and bones. Sulfur is critical for making joint cartilage and keratin of the skin and hair, and new research suggests that sulfur is almost as significant as Vitamin C because the human body must maintain a minimum level of sulfur for normal function.

The body uses up to an eighth of a teaspoon of sulfur daily to keep the cell membranes open and prevent the hardening of tissues. New cells in our bodies need an exorbitant supply of sulfur and sulfur is even in the hemoglobin of the blood. Sulfur is not stored in the body and any surplus is oxidized to sulfate and excreted in the urine or is stored as glutathione.

Sulfur deficiency is linked to a host of degenerative diseases, such as: pain, joint trouble, fatigue, increased psychological and physical stress, and depression, as well as other conditions. Some children with autism have a low level of sulfate in their bodies due to poor absorption in the gut, excess loss in the urine, or poor recycling of sulfate by the kidney. Oxidative stress and inflammation can shut down cysteine dioxygenase, to block the cysteine -> sulfate route.

MSM in supplement form mimics the organic sulfur present in our bodies. MSM is also known as dimethyl sulfone which is the sulfur compound nutrient found throughout the diets of virtually all vertebrates. It is odorless in its purified chemical form and is a water-soluble, white crystalline solid. It belongs in the same chemical family as oxygen and is a powerful antioxidant and detoxifier that even binds and assists in the removal of heavy metals from the body.

When your body is injured, MSM promotes healthy circulation to the injured area so nutrients can rush in for repairs. MSM has an antiseptic and cleansing effect on the digestive tract while stimulating bile secretions, purifying the blood, improving hair condition, helping liver function while boosting metabolism, and is used to produce glutathione - all while working overtime to prevent the accumulation of toxic impurities.

MSM is also one really great supplement for repairing joint troubles and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Sulfur is found in raw milk (but not pasteurized milk), meat, fish, fruits, vegetables and grains. One of the best sources for sulfur is garlic and onions. Unfortunately, our processed food diets do not deliver adequate amounts of this nutrient. Processing, drying, cooking and preserving strips our foods of sulfur, making supplementation more important than ever. Supplemental MSM is a safe and natural way to reap the therapeutic benefits of sulfur.

MSM is a dietary supplement that does not require a prescription. A daily dose of 1,000 mg is common, and for some conditions, doses as high as two to six grams may be appropriate when taken for bowel tolerance (if the stool becomes loose, back off the dosage).

Try some for a while and see if things improve in your health.

NFL Inactive List, Week 3: Falcons Vs. Chargers: Joe Hawley, Cliff Matthews Out For Atlanta

San Diego Chargers running back Ronnie Brown is inactive for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons. Brown is one of seven Chargers inactive; seven Falcons are also inactive.

Brown has nine rushes this season for 13 yards as the Chargers' backup to Ryan Mathews.

No starters are among the seven inactive Falcons: backup center Joe Hawley, fourth-string running back Antone Smith, third-string left tackle Lamar Holmes, third-string quarterback Dominique Davis, backup cornerback Chris Owens, third-string defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi, and third-string defensive end Cliff Matthews make up the list.

Despite being arrested earlier this week for driving under the influence, Falcons running back Michael Turner was listed as a starter Sunday.

For the Chargers, Brown and starting defensive tackle Antonio Garay are the most prominent inactives. The other five: backup left tackle Jared Gaither, fourth-string tight end Ladarius Green, backup strong safety Brandon Taylor, backup cornerback Shareece Wright and backup inside linebacker Jonas Mouton.

Chargers tight end Antonio Gates, who was listed as "probable" on the Chargers' injury report Friday, is active and expected to start Sunday.

GDP data, weak profits could weigh on stocks

By Reuters

NEW YORK - Stocks could struggle to stay close to nearly five-year highs this week as worries mount about third-quarter earnings and the market appears primed for a pullback from recent stimulus-driven gains.?

A bevy of economic reports, including durable goods orders, will grab attention, particularly after the Federal Reserve unveiled its plan on September 13 for a third round of aggressive stimulus to help revive the flagging U.S. economy.?

While the action ignited a rally in stocks, analysts have worried that it may suggest the U.S. economy is in worse shape than many had feared.?

To be sure, stocks are at lofty levels and are likely to attract investors hoping the market will ride out the year on a positive note. The Dow Jones industrial average and the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index remain close to highs not seen since December 2007. The S&P 500 is up 16.1 percent since the end of 2011.
?
"I think the market certainly is ripe for a pullback. But whatever the pullback, it's going to be rather shallow," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, in New York.?

"Any disappointment in key economic data that would reverse the market's feeling the economy has stabilized, I think could trigger a 2 to 4 percent pullback," he added.?

Some of that move was seen last week in stocks. The S&P 500 slipped 0.4 percent for the week. The Dow industrials and the Nasdaq each finished the week down 0.1 percent.?

Besides August durable goods orders, data on personal income and spending is due this week, as well as new home sales and the final read on U.S. Gross Domestic Product for the second quarter.?

Housing data has been surprisingly strong in recent months and homebuilder shares have experienced massive gains. The PHLX housing sector index is up 62.3 percent since December 31. But that strength has been offset by worrisome data on U.S. manufacturing, which had been among the economy's strongest sectors. The stubbornly high U.S. unemployment rate also has kept a damper on Wall Street's mood.?

Gloom and doom

Profit warnings from such high-profile U.S. companies as FedEx helped cement the view last week that third-quarter results could be a drag on the market.?

"We've had some pretty negative pre-announcements, and those announcements for this time frame have been a little more than we've had in the past," Cardillo said.?

Estimates for S&P 500 companies' third-quarter profits have fallen sharply in recent months, and earnings now are expected to drop 2.2 percent from a year ago, according to Thomson Reuters data. It would be the first such decline in three years.?

Outlooks for the third quarter are at the most negative since the third quarter of 2001, the data also showed. The negative-to-positive ratio for the upcoming earnings period stands at 4.3 to 1.?

Third-quarter earnings are not expected to start in earnest until after the second week of October, when Alcoa is expected to kick off the reporting period.?

"What I'm worried about is what I don't know," said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management, in New York.?

That includes negative surprises on earnings, he said, as well as the chance that China's economy may be slowing faster than economists previously thought.?

"The aggressiveness of the (Fed's) quantitative easing has caused me alarm," Cote said.?

The Fed's recent action followed a decision by the European Central Bank to support debt-ridden euro-zone nations by purchasing their debt.?

Speculation on Friday that Spain was moving toward a bailout request gave investors some relief. The debt-laden country, which is likely to stay in focus next week, said it was considering freezing pensions and speeding up a planned rise in the retirement age as it raced to cut spending and meet conditions of an expected international sovereign aid package.?

Both central bank moves are expected to provide a floor for the market, possibly through year end, analysts said.?

"Financial markets will benefit more than the economy," said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co, in Lake Oswego, Oregon.?

With the Fed's decision out of the way, investors are also likely to turn their attention to other issues, including November's U.S. presidential election, he said, and looming decisions about U.S. fiscal policy.?

CNBC's Sue Herera looks ahead to what are likely to be next week's top business and financial stories.

White Chocolate Brownies & A Giveaway - The Nifty Foodie

White Chocolate Brownies

I love living in the South. Sure, the heat index is enough to make you want to just sit in an ice bath all day, but the food?! Oh, the food MORE than makes up for it.

Around here?.

?your cooking is judged based on how good your gumbo is
?we embrace stale bread for bread pudding
?we have a love (the drink)/hate (the storm) relationship with hurricanes
?we don?t mind getting our hands dirty to dig out tiny pieces of seafood over newspaper
?a biggie?you know the difference between creole and cajun food

I know a lot of people frown upon Louisiana since there are some stigmas about living here, but I really am blessed to say that this is my home. I just love the little things that make Louisiana home, and even if I don?t live here the rest of my life, I know that Louisiana will always be a part of me. Cheesy, but seriously true.

When I was contacted about reviewing a cookbook called ?The Southern Foodie?, I just couldn?t resist. The book, written by food/drink/travel writer Chris Chamberlain, features recipes from favorite restaurants in the South and it?s organized by state. Of course, when I got the cookbook, I frantically flipped through the pages and bookmarked numerous recipes.

I was very happy to see Louisiana well-represented in the book, too. There are some great staples in there, like red beans and rice, pralines and bread pudding, to name a few. Besides the classics, I found that there are some fun, out of the box recipes, like barbequed oysters and sweet potato-andouille soup. This book is great for someone trying to get a feel for Southern food, and even for Southerners, it?s impressive how many different recipes the author has in here that I?ve never heard of.

One of the hardest things for me when I find a good cookbook is to choose a first recipe. I actually have quite a few that I want to try, but I was really in the mood to bake, so I decided to make these white chocolate brownies. I love that brownies bake up so quickly and you don?t have to fork out the mixer to make them. It?s sort of dangerous how easy brownies are to throw together and these were no exception. :-) This brownie is a white chocolate brownie base with white and bittersweet chocolate mixed in. Often times, I find white chocolate desserts to be a little too sweet, but I really think the bittersweet chocolate helped to balance things out a good bit. I ended up halving the recipe, since the original recipe makes two 13?9 inch pans worth of brownies (the halved recipe is below). I sent these to work with my husband, and found out that some people enjoyed 2-3 brownies on their own, so this recipe is definitely a winner. Based on this recipe, I can?t wait to give some others a try!

Now, you know I wouldn?t just dangle this cookbook in front of y?all without having a giveaway. :-) The publisher sent me extra books to giveaway to two lucky readers!

Cookbook Giveaway

To enter, just let me know What?s your favorite Southern dish or what Southern dish have you always wanted to try?

For an extra entry, tweet ?I entered to win a copy of ?The Southern Foodie? from @niftyfoodie. Enter here: http://bit.ly/Um2ByC? (and also leave an additional comment letting me know that you tweeted).

You have until Friday, October 5th at 11:59pm to comment.

Just a note: Only continental US readers can enter this giveaway.

Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this cookbook from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review. They also provided the copies of the book to giveaway. All opinions are my own.

  • 1 1/2 sticks of unsalted butter, cut into 4 tbsp. pieces
  • 6 oz. finely chopped white chocolate
  • 3 large eggs
  • pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 oz. coarsely chopped white chocolate
  • 4 oz. coarsely chopped bittersweet chocolate

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 13?9 inch baking pan.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter on low heat. Once the butter is melted, add the finely chopped white chocolate and stir until the chocolate is melted. Remove the pan from heat, and allow it to cool.
  3. While the chocolate is cooling, add the eggs and salt to a large bowl and whisk well, until the eggs are light and frothy. Slowly add the sugar and butter/chocolate mixture while mixing, and then add the vanilla extract and flour. Mix the batter until everything is smooth and well-combined. Add the coarsely chopped white and bittersweet chocolate and mix them in well.
  4. Pour the batter into your greased pan, and bake for 25-30 minutes, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Cut the brownies and enjoy!

No. 24 Boise State holds off BYU 7-6

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? Nose tackle Mike Atkinson returned a second-half interception 36 yards for a touchdown and No. 24 Boise State survived a four-quarter rally to beat BYU 7-6 on Thursday night in a game dominated by defense.

Boise State (2-1) forced five turnovers and held the Cougars (2-2) to 200 total yards. The Cougars were held scoreless until the final minutes of the game when backup freshman quarterback Taysom Hill scored on a 4-yard run.

But with 3:37 remaining, BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall elected to go for the win and the Cougars' first-ever victory over Boise State. But Hill's pass on the run was deflected by a defender and fell incomplete in the end zone.

The Broncos, helped by a long kick return, ran out the clock to notch their third straight victory over the Cougars.

Boise State's offense wasn't much better, managing just 261 yards. Running back D.J. Harper led the way, rushing for 112 yards on 31 carries. Joe Southwick struggled again, especially on third and fourth downs. Southwick was 15 of 25 for 145 yards.

Boise State failed five times on fourth down attempts, with most of those coming in BYU territory and after Michael Frisina missed a 33-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter.

After a scoreless first half, Atkinson finally put some points on the board. On BYU's first possession of the second half, Atkinson dropped back in pass coverage and stepped in front of Riley Nelson's short pass. Atkinson then rumbled 36 yards for a touchdown to put Boise State up 7-0 at the 13:24 mark.

Nelson was benched after throwing his third interception of the game on BYU's next possession and replaced by Hill, who grew up in Pocatello, Idaho, and was recruited by Boise State.

Hill's legs finally provided the Cougars with a spark on offense. On BYU's final possession, Hill engineered an 11-play, 95-yard drive that was helped early by a Boise State personal foul. Hill was 3 of 5 on the drive and rushed for 39 yards.

For the game, Hill was 4 of 10 for 42 yards and he led the Cougars with 72 yards on 12 carries.
